“Eat to Live” – Or Do We Live to Eat?

“Eat to Live” – Or Do We Live to Eat?

“Food is not important; it is just there to sustain me” - this recent comment by an 80 year old American, prompts this question - “Do we, as a society, live to eat?” Obesity has become the major health concern in many countries around the world; is this elderly American’s attitude representative of how the general population thinks?

Dr. Joel Fuhrman has written a book called “Eat to Live: the Revolutionary Formula for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss“, and in it he presents his scientifically proven eating plan for losing large amounts of weight very quickly and being able to keep the weight off.

Dr. Fuhrman’s theory revolves around the idea that it is knowledge that enables us to lose weight. He expresses his idea of nutrient density with a formula of Health = Nutrients/Calories. We need to consume fewer calories if we are to lose weight, maintain a healthy weight and be able to live a full and healthy life.

He teaches that the secret to avoid those hunger pangs is to eat nutrient dense foods like vegetables, beans and fruit which provide considerable bulk for a low calorie count. Eating these foods will make you feel full without too many calories, at the same time meeting the needs of the body for the correct nutrients.

A change in how we live is what is required; losing bad eating habits and creating better healthy ones. Dr. Fuhrman does not give a complex diet plan, but presents a simple eating regime with the emphasis on salads, vegetables and fruit. We need to learn what real hunger feels like; not the pseudo-hunger felt after eating junk food.

There are menus for a week with recipes for vegetarians as well as meat lovers. Meal suggestions for a day might read like this:

Breakfast: Baked apple with raisins and cinnamon.

Lunch: Salad-stuffed pita with hummus spread and fresh fruit.

Dinner: Mixed baby greens with cracked peppercorn dressing; broccoli and red pepper soup with one slice of 7-grain bread, corn on the cob with vegetable-based seasoning.

“Eat to Live” will give you the knowledge to make the necessary changes in your life to achieve fast and healthy weight loss. One reader is quoted as saying of the book, “No one could adopt these dietary changes without seeing improvement, or complete resolution, of their chronic health conditions.”
